There are some new forthcoming UNISON Activist courses for the first term of 2022, please see below a list of the courses.

  • Online Organising Steward
    18th January – 15th February 2022
    10am-12pm for 5 Tuesday Mornings.
    This is a five-day course for UNISON stewards and workplace representatives. It covers the role of the stewards in UNISON, UNISON structure, basic organisational, representational and communication skills, equalities and all the basics a steward needs to know in order to take on this role.This course is included in the National Qualifications and Credit Framework. Completion of this course will provide a TUC Award.

  • Online TUC Union Representatives (Public Sector) Stage 1
    19th January – 30th March 2022
    10am-12pm for 10 Wednesday Mornings
    This 10 week course will provide an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to represent members effectively and strengthen union organisation.
    The course will include sessions on communications, collective bargaining, union organisation and recruitment, health and safety, equalities, campaigning, and how to represent members in grievance and disciplinary cases. On completion of this course stewards will receive a nationally recognised TUC certificate.Please note there will be a break w/c 23rd February for half term.

  • Online Introduction to Health and Safety
    20th January – 17th February 2022
    10am-12pm for 5 Thursday Mornings
    This course covers the role of the Health and Safety Representative, legislation, workplace inspections and developing local strategies. This is an essential starting point for new Health and Safety representatives.Click here to book onto ONLINE Introduction to Health and Safety
  • Online Mental Health in the Workplace
    1st February 2022
    The day will be split into 2 hour sessions running 10am –12pm and 1.30pm-3.30pm.
    The tutors will be online and available from 9.30am to assist with any technical issues.This new course will look how we can build a mentally healthier workplace, ensuring your employer adheres to the relevant health and safety legislation and guidance.. Mental health at work is a health and safety issue, an unhealthy workplace has physical risks and psychological risks which can be just as damaging. It also involves organising, bargaining and building partnerships.
    This course will cover:

    • What affects our mental health at work • Dealing with mental health issues • Legal obligations of employers • Organising to improve mental health at work.

  • Online Handling Grievance and Disciplinary
    1st February – 2nd February 2022
    The two days will run online via Zoom as follows, with tasks set in between the main sessions on each day:Day 1- 2 sessions of 2 hours (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm) Day 2- 2 sessions of 2 hours (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm)

    This two-day course concentrates on building the skills, techniques and confidence needed for workplace stewards to represent members. It examines the contents of grievance and disciplinary procedures, the influence of the ACAS Code of Practice then moves on to develop the skills needed for preparing a case, interviewing, and representing a member.

    Stewards must have completed either the 5-day Organising Steward course or the 10-day TUC Union Representatives Stage 1 course before applying for this course.

  • Online Sickness Absence Reviews
    15th February 2022
    The course will be two 90 minute sessions on the day which is 3 hours of guided learning in total. You will need access to a laptop or computer for both sessions and be familiar with using Zoom.
    This one day course will examine the principles and priorities to consider when representing a UNISON member at a sickness absence review meeting. It will explore the basics of preparing yourself and the member for a meeting and possible outcomes.No prior knowledge of representing a member at a review meeting is required.

    This is a follow on course from the Organising Steward course.

  • Online Dealing with a Disciplinary Case
    8th March – 9th March 2022
    Day 1- 2 sessions of 2 hours (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm) Day 2- 2 sessions of 2 hours (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm)
    It is advisable that new representatives attend the Handling Grievance and Disciplinary Casework course before applying for this course.This 2 day course is based on developing skills and a systematic approach to dealing with disciplinary cases. It uses a single set of case notes to consider alternative approaches for dealing with a disciplinary case. The course follows a case portrayed on video to which the stewards have to respond to as the case unfolds. Ideal for stewards who want to improve their representational skills, and for ERA certified representatives who want refresher training.

  • Online ERA Refresher
    15th March – 16th March 2022

    The course will be delivered over 2 days, 2 virtual sessions per day with some work to complete in between the sessions.Course aims:

    • Update on new developments internally and externally which impact upon your role as a UNISON rep.
    • To inform you on changes in the legislative and legal framework.
    • To share skills and experience as UNISON reps.
    • To explore how we build the strength of UNISON in a changing industrial relations environment.

  • Online Dealing With Redundancies
    22nd March 2022
    The course will be two 90 minute sessions on the day which is 3 hours of guided learning in total. You will need access to a laptop or computer for both sessions and be familiar with using Zoom.Across the Public Sector jobs are under threat. Strong union organisation is the best defence, but sometimes this is not enough. Therefore, union representatives need to know the legal requirements on employers when they are proposing job cuts, and to consider alternatives to redundancy. This workshop will cover: • The extent and limitations of redundancy law; • Legal rights to consultation; • Time off to look for alternative employment; • The impact of the Public Sector Equality Duties; • Alternatives to redundancy.

  • Online Dealing With a Grievance Case
    5th April – 6th April 2022
    The two days will run online via Zoom as follows, with tasks set in between the main sessions on each day:Day 1- 2 sessions of 2 hours (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm) Day 2- 2 sessions of 2 hours (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm)It is advisable that new representatives attend the Handling Grievance and Disciplinary Casework course before applying for this course.

    This 2 day course is based on a single case study and utilises filmed extracts of the case as it unfolds. The course materials cover the entire process of dealing with a grievance, from the initial confirmation of a case, case research, to dealing with the issues that arise in the grievance hearing. The case study incorporates equalities issues. Ideal for stewards who want to improve their representational skills, and for ERA certified representatives who want refresher training.
