February is LGBT+ History Month and the theme for this year is Medicine – #UnderTheScope.
The 2024 theme celebrates LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.
Who is LGBT+ History Month for?
LGBT+ History Month is for everyone; whether you work in education, a museum, a library or an art gallery, a business, a service, or are a member of a network/social group or an individual.
Why was LGBT+ History Month founded?
Because for along time LBGT+ people’s history was hidden, following the repeal of Section 28, UK LGBT+ History Month was created to claim the past, celebrate the present and create the future.
2024 LGBT+ History Month
Over the last 30 years Stonewall have helped create transformative change in the lives of LGBT+ people in the UK – today LGBT+ people have equal rights to love, marry and have children and their lives, families and relationships are represented as part of the national curriculum in most of the UK.
There is however a rising intolerance degrading those hard won rights but UNISON stands by LGBT+ Members – and there is more work to be done.
In 2024, Stonewall and many LGBT+ people are fighting to get a ban on conversion therapy and protect the LGBT+ community – working to protect LGBT+ inclusive education, so another generation of young people doesn’t have to grow up feeling unsafe and excluded.
2024 is a pivotal year. Let’s make it one that we can look back on with pride.
