Being a Steward is a very important activity. As a steward you are someone who cares about your workplace, your colleagues and supporting them. You can be a part of solving problems and getting things done to make work better for you and your colleagues.
As a steward, you will help to organise your colleagues into an effective, strong and welcoming membership.
You can be a part of making working life better for you and your colleagues.
You can also know first hand what the problems are at your workplace or what issues there are. This can all be fed back to the Stewards Committee and make a difference.
Stewards in workplaces where UNISON is recognised by the employer have rights to time off for training and to carry out their work. New stewards are required to attend an introductory course. There is also training available on how to handle grievances and disciplinary matters, to help aid with representation.
Stewards have a right to be involved in how their branch is run and are the most important link between the members and the union.
- Are the first point of contact for members in a workplace
- Talk to members about the union
- Talk to staff about their issues
- Offer advice on issues at work
- Represent members in cases (including at disciplinary and grievance hearings).
- Campaign for better working conditions
- Recruit and organise new members
- Encourage more members to get active in UNISON
- Raise your members’ issues with the branch.
- So how do you become a steward?
Stewards are elected each year by the group of members that they represent and the post is open to job share. You will need a unison member proposer and seconder to sign the election forms and you must hold a meeting to elect yourself as steward with your work based membership approval. The forms must be returned to the Branch office. The term of office is from March to February on a yearly basis.
