Birmingham Unison strongly condemn the racist abuse that has been displayed via social media, and other channels following the Euro’s football result. We encourage staff to report any discriminatory posts via the appropriate channels both on social media and otherwise.
The abuse that the players have been receiving is unacceptable.
The team achieved an amazing feat in getting England to the final because they stood together as a team, it is a team which stands for equality, fairness and against discrimination and we should treat them with respect as human beings, regardless of scoring goals.
Nobody deserves abuse, the rise in hate crime and abuse since the match towards Black people generally is disgusting and cannot be tolerated. We do not stand for racism in this Branch.
The England team respect each other as team mates, and stand united – which is what we would expect from our members on issues of race discrimination and equality, the players deserve the same level of respect that you would offer your friends and colleagues.
We condemn the abuse and stand with the players who have been subject to it along with the general public who have received hate.
Our England football players are taking the lead that our politicians need to follow.
